We participated in the Kitano Shrine’s Bon Odori event at Matsugaoka (Nakano). August ‘s first Saturday: the fourth. There were twenty-seven participants — including teachers and students from the TCC Japanese Language School, volunteers who helped with the donning of kimonos, and members of the Friday Volunteers Group. The student participants hailed from China and Vietnam.
While wearing kimonos, those who wanted their hair to be put up assisted one another. It was pleasant to watch this scene. The participants looked quite pretty in the variously-colored yukata kimonos.
Those who came from the organizing group, the Matsugaoka-Katayama Neighborhood Association, were very kind, in taking care of us at the Bon Odori place. Everyone stayed and enjoyed the dancing — to celebrate the Bon Odori Festival until the last. It was a summer night that will be remembered with fondness.
