A ‘tea ceremony’ was held at the Yayoi Japanese language class at the beginning of 2024.

In between Japanese language lessons, the students took turns to experience the tea ceremony in a Japanese-style room.

First, taking care not to step on the edges of the tatami mats, they went to the tokonoma (alcove) and admired the hanging scrolls and the flower arrangement on display.

Next, after playing with Japanese New Year games such as kites, kendama, paper balloons and koma, they sat down.

First, sweets were handed out and eaten, followed by matcha tea.

The learners nervously listened to the explanation of how to drink the tea.

The children tried their hand and their faces were impressive when they drank the bitter tea.
