The Tuberculosis and Infectious Disease Prevention Section of the Nakano Public Health Centre came to the three Japanese language classes for adults and explained in ‘Easy Japanese’ and encouraged the learners to take tuberculosis tests. Although the number of TB cases is decreasing, the proportion of foreign-born people who develop TB after coming to Japan is higher than that of Japanese people. The period of 24th-30th of September is the ‘Tuberculosis and Respiratory Infections Prevention Week’ every year, and it is publicized that the Nakano Public Health Centre offers free X-rays for detecting TB. As both the slides and leaflets were in ‘Easy Japanese’ and it was explained in an easy-to-understand manner, the Japanese language learners were listening with serious expressions. On the 19th, about 10 of the Japanese language learners visited the centre and they were able to have an X-ray examination.
Since 2021, Association for Nakano International Communications has been holding ‘Easy Japanese’ study courses for Nakano Ward employees on commission from Nakano Ward, where people from departments that directly deal with foreign residents learn and practise ‘Easy Japanese’.
Foreigners who want to learn Japanese come to Association for Nakano International Communications almost every day. Many of them have only been in Japan for about six months. We hope that our efforts to communicate in Easy Japanese will continue to grow.
